Sorry - I'm just being silly. No, I don't like spiders. AT ALL. Still, I picked this project from Monique's book because the block really intrigued me. I've never seen one quite like it!
I struggled a bit with getting the first block done. Totally operator error, not the fault of the instructions. On page 34 when it tells you to "Make sure it looks exactly like the diagram, with the main light on the left and the
dark on the right" - I suggest following that recommendation or your block will not turn out. Nope, not at all....
Thelma talked about 'bending the rules' last year. Well, I'm the defiant one this year. First, although this is called Fat Quarter Traditional Quilts, I wanted to use a fat eighth bundle of Fig Tree's California Girl. I was able to get one block from each fat eighth (with some left over), so if you want a scrappier look, you can use fat eighths for the Spider blocks, too.
I made 3 test blocks and then decided to go into assembly line mode for the rest of the blocks. I had all the centers done and started to put them together side by side. I really liked the blocks, so I made a little baby quilt from just the centers of the Spider block. If you cut carefully, you can make 2 "center" blocks from one layer cake square and some background - how's that for frugal?Be sure and leave a comment on this post for a chance to win a copy of Monique's book, Fat Quarter Traditional Quilts and one of her fabulous rulers. ReplyDeleteI like to get fat quarters. . . I still use some "old" templated patterns that require a bit of extra fabric so if there are pre-cuts that I like they would need to be the quarters to give me more options.

ReplyDeleteI rarely buy pre-cuts, but when I do, I buy the 2.5" strips. I use them for sashing, or cut them into squares, or use them for applique work. I don't have many of them, (about ten) but the ones I have, I love!

ReplyDeleteI think my favourite precuts are the fat eighth bundles as well - enough fabric to play around with without being shoe-horned into specific dimensions, yet not so much to be hanging around forever in the stash closet afterwards.
The only pre-cuts that I have worked with are charm packs. I like using them as they make up quickly and are a little bit of instant gratification. Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI think there are definite advantages to all the precuts--but looking at what's in my sewing room right now, I'm using more charm squares--probably because I love the ability to make a small prayer quilt fairly quickly.
When my budget allows, I like fat quarters but find I can't bear to use them. Or I will get too many ideas for the same fabric group and be halted in my tracks making the decision to break them out. Love this pattern and look forward to giving it a try with some of my stash.

ReplyDeleteRecently I have made the same "discovery" as you talked about. The fat 1/8th bundle does just what you said. Not as expensive but still enough fabric to work with and get a decent size project perhaps by adding in some yardage as well. I love having the whole line of fabric to work with.

I am a big fan of pre-cuts. Gone are the days of having to buy more fabric than you need to get a small piece. I love the quilt - you certainly can't go wrong with Fig Tree fabrics!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I want to make it! I have not used a lot of precuts, other than fat quarters, so I guess that's my favorite. I recently puchased a couple of charm packs for the first time and just sewed one pack together patchwork style. Enjoyed the easy process.
ReplyDeleteI just started getting more interested in quilting about 2 yrs ago and then learned more about designer fabrics. Because I don't have a huge budget to spend, I started collecting charm squares because they were affordable and I could get a piece of fabric from each in the entire fabric collections that I loved so much. I was still limited in those because I was beginning to fill the area I had set up for those fabrics. Since though I have been buying less fabrics but only because I started thinking I really preferred to buy fat quarters since it gave me many more options than I had with charm packs but the downfall was they cost more, thus the fact I wasn't able to purchase as often as I wanted. I do still think though that fat quarters are probably my preferred way to purchase.

ReplyDeleteLove the pattern you're working on! I tend to pick the project first, and then find the right sized precut to accommodate it. But if I see a fabric line I just love..and no project in mind...I'll buy a fat quarter bundle with yardage for borders.
ReplyDeleteI just can't get over Jelly rolls. They are just so cute all bundled, and then there are SO many options of what to do with them. They are probably my fav by default, though-- I have a ton of "Jelly Roll" books. I have been quilting for almost 20 years, and I'm not yet 40.... I have NEVER had a FQB.... it's kind of a dream of mine. If I don't get one by the time I'm 40 (w/in 2 years) then I'm buying myself one for my 40th birthday and then I WILL NEED this book!!! :)

I'm a spider fan - they eat other bugs. But your spiders are better! I like layer cakes, since you can cut them up in creative ways, add a back ground fabric and get a lap quilt with ease.

This quilt is intriguing. I hate spiders and in fact, I have a horror story about getting bit by a brown recluse. However, my husband LOVES playing spider solitaire on the computer, and as you put it, this quilt block is really different! As to precuts, I like charm packs. I rarely use an entire collection for a quilt, but I joined in with Another Year of Schnibbles, so I have been using charm packs for the first time, and it is sort of fun! Aloha!

That is a tough question, most likely fat quarters bundles, I love where you buy the bundle pull it apart and see the whole range. I have found quite often I do not use the whole range in a quilt so the extras go into my stash. my second fave would be the jelly rolls and I do seem to have a very large number of these to be used at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI use a lot of charm squares, because they can be cut into four 2.5" squares. These in turn sew up into quick 4 patches. Makes for great quick scrappy quilts. Fat quarters are my next favorite. I can get lots of different cuts from one.

ReplyDeleteLove your squares. I graduated from the University of Richmond (go Spiders!) so I love all things spiders. As soon as I saw the name of your square I knew a quilt was in my future. I like the layer cakes, mostly because i like to make small squares as in the Civil War, Farmer's Wife and Dear Jane blocks and get a lot of use pieces from them.

ReplyDeleteOh my, I love that your frugal with fabric, I think any quilter likes to get as much as possible out of her cutting. I always try to cut so that my leftovers are large enough pieces to do exactly what you did, get a second, albeit different quilt from my scraps, maybe even a little table topper or pin cushion for fun. My favorite precut is fat quarter bundles or fat eighth bundles. Though I have only ever had one (and won that two years ago and haven't cut into it yet because it is so glorious...I do pet it a lot *hanging head in shame*). I can't afford the expensive bundles but oh they are so, so nice. You can get so much from one bundle it amazes me, of course, you have to add the background fabric, but that's the easy part! My fav precut is the layer cake. Although I generally make large(throw or bed size) quilts, I enjoy making small quilts, too. The layer cakes have enough fabric, in a good variety, to make a small quilt that I can finish in no time at all. (Or make a complicated quilt not so overwhelming.) PS. I like the Spider block too.

ReplyDeleteIf it is a fabric I really really love I will get a FQ bundle, otherwise I will go with a F8th bundle. Sometimes if I have a particular pattern in mind I will go jelly roll/layer cake/charm squares, but I like that you can cut up a FQ/F8 bundle to get pretty much any quilt that uses the smaller precuts.

ReplyDeleteFat quarter bundles all the way! They just give you so much to work with. And the price as compared to jelly rolls, etc. is so much better. Imagine how much it'd cost if you bought enough jelly rolls to equal a fat quarter bundles. Its a lot.

ReplyDeleteOoh!! I am in love with this block!!! And your version of it is perfect! California Girl is one of my favourite lines too!!! ... I don't really know if I can determine a particular size pre-cut! I do love my charms for patterns you need little pieces/squares for - easy to whip up a cute, fun child-sized quilt with just a little yardage to border ... Layer cakes and jelly rolls have their perfect patterns, and always a great way to utilise smaller amounts of a favourite range, or to just test it out ... Love jellies for hexi quilts!! ... And FQs and F8s are perfect when you want a little more fabric, but still want to utilise the whole (or most of) a particular range! ... Whatever the size though, I do prefer to use pre cuts to just picking and choosing as I am still not completely confident with my ability to coordinate fabrics from differing lines yet ... something I hope to gain confidence in the future!

ReplyDeleteWhat I buy depends if I have a project in mind. If not with fabric getting so expensive I have started buying a few fat eighth bundles. It is almost like buying two Layer Cakes if the line has several fabrics in it. Love the pattern you are doing!

I love getting fat quarter bundles even though a lot of the time I have a hard time digging into them because they are so pretty all stacked up! I love your baby quilt!
ReplyDeleteFat eights and fat quarters really appeal to the have to have the whole line syndrom - I bad about another of the other cuts as I never want to separate them.
ReplyDeleteI love layer cakes and fat eights. Fat quarters are usually too expensive for me with lots leftover so I go for the cakes and eights. I do like fat quarters when I find a quilt store that has a fabulous collection that I can pick and choose from.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite pre-cut is charm squares. They're inexpensive and I can try out bunches of lines of fabric. That being said, I'd love to be able to afford a FQ Bundle of each of them too, but know I'd never have enough time to use them all!

ReplyDeleteJelly Rolls are my weakness, but I have started Schnibbling and like the charm packs. A cheap, easy way to enjoy a fabric line.

I do enjoy all different cuts but my favorite is the jelly rolls. So easy to use and the scraps of which are even easier. You go girl you Rebel you! I love that you could adapt the patterns to use your fat eigths, thanks for the heads up. Jane

ReplyDeleteMy favourite pre-cut. Well, if I could, fat quarters would be my preference -- just so much fabric goodness to play with. But charm packs are good, and can help get you through and over a great fabric collection.

I love the fat-eighth bundles as well. Most of the quilts that I make are scrappy and with those small pieces of fabric, cutting a quilt is easy. I also like the charm packs for the same reason.

ReplyDeleteI seem to have a preference towards charm packs, because that is what i found the most of when re-arranging my sewing area this weekend. I guess i really just love any type of fabric. will keep my eyes open to look for fat eighths on my next shopping adventure! Love the look of your blocks!

ReplyDeleteI love all precuts and it's hard to choose a favorite. I freely buy all sizes lol! Jelly rolls and charm squares must be my favorites because I have oodles of both. Fat eights are great too and I wish there were more patterns for them.

ReplyDeleteI like charm packs the best. I love to see all the fabrics in a line for a reasonable price, and I often will plan a quilt with fat quarters with my ideas. The charms seem more versatile than jelly rolls, but of course it depends on what pattern I've decided on. Haven't tried fat 8ths yet, but probably should!

ReplyDeleteI like fat quarter bundles (though they are rare for me) because if I love the fabrics enough to splurge on the bundle, I can make it go a very long way. Finding usable leftover scraps of a much loved older fabric line always makes me smile!

I actually flipped through this book this week at my LQS and I saw this quilt in it... I really love your version of the block. The whole book has wonderful patterns in it. I would love a chance to win it... if I don't win, I know where to buy it!

It really depends. I like fat quarters because I hate to use up all my fabric. But then that's wasteful because you have to do scrappy and maybe you don't have enough to do the color scheme you were thinking so you have to go buy more and on and on. But I also like to chose my prints instead of getting them preselected in the jelly roll or charm pack. But I generally like the prints selected so I do use them. Like I said, it depends. ReplyDeleteMy favorite pre-cuts are charm squares and fat quarters. Lots of versatility---Charm squares are great because you can invest a little and be able to preview fabric selections-before your invest in the fat quarters.

I love charm packs , although I have dabbled in all of the precuts a little bit. The charms give you a little taste and you can get a nice lap size or baby quilt with one pack, some sashing and a yard for the border!
